THIS BITTER EARTH
Mother and Daughter dance for Call to Peace project.
KATHY VLASSOPOLOUS and ZOE GURR dance for visual artist Nina Sanadze ‘Call to Peace’ sculpture. The dance defines what the sculpture represents as described by Nina – fear, rage, trauma but strength, resolve and hope. The dancers respond to the sculpture, the music and their relationship of family, unconditional love and safety. Interweaving through the dance is trust and the undefined instinct of love and hope which the women express through dance. The dance intersects their training in the Mangala method of creative dance, contemporary and Classical Indian dance.

CLAIRE JAMES
Claire James is passionate about the power of music to create harmony and healing. Her exploration of sound as a therapeutic medium is nourished by her collective experiences as a wellness practitioner, singer of devotional music, and observer of Nature. Her performance for Call to Peace is a rendition of Ethereal Earth, an original composition recently recorded with her partner in The Amethyst Sea as a musical prayer of healing and gratitude. You will be invited to offer your own voice as an instrument of peace in an uplifting celebration of our connection with ourselves, each other and with this planet we call home.

SINGING FOR PEACE
Jeannie Marsh and Nancy Atkin (Climate Choir Melbourne), Michael Roper (Victorian Trade Union Choir), and Emily Hayes (Brunswick Rogues choir)
This project was conceived in late 2021 as a way for Melbourne choirs to work together to call for peace through song. Raising our voices to call for peace has a long and powerful history, and the brutal invasion of Ukraine has made this mission more urgent than ever. Join us to sing Peace Songs as part of the outdoor art installation “Call to Peace” at the corner of Clarendon and Coventry Streets in South Melbourne. We invite you to come and sing together around a dramatic sculpture of a woman demanding peace by Georgian-Australian sculptor Nina Sanadze. Jeannie Marsh and Nancy Atkin (Climate Choir Melbourne), Michael Roper (Victorian Trade Union Choir), and Emily Hayes (Brunswick Rogues choir) will be there leading a singalong of simple Peace Songs. You can also share your own peace songs. Not in a choir? Haven’t sung in years? No problems: just come along and sing!

PETER REID

Pete Lyrebird is the musical moniker for Naarm/Melbourne based and Lutruwita/Tasmanian born singer-songwriter and actor-maker Pete Reid.  He’s an observer of small things, overlooked moments, brittle and broken people, strange phenomena and the murkier edges of the heart.  Performed with his distinctive baritone, the music of Pete Lyrebird conjures a breed of alt’ folk, broadcast from its own surreal and idiosyncratic universe. Pete’s set will be presented as a public rehearsal toward some upcoming recordings and he may just be joined by a special guest.
